Where scores fall

IQ scores are set so that the average is 100 and most people land close to it. Half of everyone scores between 90 and 109.

How your score is worked out

  1. Each correct answer earns 1, 2 or 3 points, depending on how hard the question is.
  2. The points add up to a raw score out of 71.
  3. The raw score is placed on the IQ scale, where 100 is average and 15 points is one standard step.
  4. You see the estimate, a likely range, your percentile and how you did in each of the four areas.

What this test cannot tell you

  • It is a short online test, so the score is an estimate with a likely range of 8 points either side.
  • The scoring is based on how hard the questions were designed to be. It has not yet been checked against a large group of test takers.
  • It measures reasoning only. It says nothing about memory, creativity, knowledge or how well you work with people.
  • It is not a clinical assessment and is not suitable for school, medical or job decisions.

Questions people ask

Is the test really free?

Yes. You see your score, your percentile, the four-area breakdown and an explanation of every answer without paying, signing up or giving an email address.

How long does it take?

The time limit is 25 minutes for 36 questions. If the clock runs out, the test is scored on the questions you answered.

How accurate is the score?

Treat it as a rough estimate. The test is short, it is taken at home without supervision, and its scoring has not yet been checked against a large sample of test takers. We show a likely range of 8 points either side of your score for that reason.

Is this the same as a professional IQ test?

No. A clinical test such as the WAIS is given one to one by a psychologist, takes over an hour and covers areas this test does not, including memory and processing speed. This test only looks at reasoning.

Do you keep my answers?

No. The test runs inside your browser and your answers are not sent to us. Your last score is saved on your own device so you can see it next time, and you can clear it by clearing the site data in your browser.

Can I take it again?

Yes, as often as you like. Bear in mind that the questions are the same each time, so a second score will usually be higher simply because you have seen them before.
